Child Vision Awareness Month

It goes without being said that children should have their eyes examined throughout the years. But do you know why it is so important?  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, vision disorders are the most prevalent handicapping conditions in childhood.

If children are experiencing vision problem, they may not realize they see things differently from others. Also vision issues can be confused with other illnesses.

Statistics from the Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc. (PPSI) show that about 20 out of every 100 school-aged children are near-sighted or far-sighted. About 5 to 10 out of every 100 children have other types of vision problems.

According to the PPSI, good vision means the following:

  • The eyes are healthy (disease-free)
  • The eyes can see things clearly up close and far away
  • The eyes work together to focus on a single object
  • The eyes move smoothly and accurately together
  • The information seen by the eyes is understood and gives meaning to what is seen

Eye doctor visits should be a routine part of your child’s health.
