Foods That Boost your Immune System

Cold and flu season is in full force. Eating well and getting the right nutrients you need can truly make a difference in fighting off an illness. Here are some key vitamins that your immune system will benefit from:

Vitamin C – an antioxidant needed for the growth and repair of tissues throughout the body. According to information from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, research shows that people who take vitamin C supplements regularly might have slightly shorter colds or somewhat milder symptoms. Food high in vitamin C include citrus fruits, spinach, kale, brussel sprouts, berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries) as well as green and red peppers.

Vitamin E – a powerful antioxidant that can help your body fight off infection. You can get Vitamin E through vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, and leafy greens – such as spinach and broccoli.

Vitamin B6 – very important in how your immune system functions. In fact, the National Institutes of Health states that this vitamin is needed for more than 100 enzyme reactions involved in metabolism. It is found naturally in many foods, including poultry, fish, potatoes, and bananas.

Vitamin A – helps strengthen the immune system.  This vitamin also plays a role in your vision, bone growth and reproduction. It includes colorful fruits and vegetables, including carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

Vitamin D – helps your body absorb calcium and plays a role in your nerve, muscle and immune systems. Vitamin D-rich foods include egg yolks, saltwater fish and liver. Other foods, such as cereal and milk, have the vitamin added.
