Preventing Razor Bumps

Although men of all ethnicities can develop razor bumps, men of darker skin are more likely to suffer from it. Approximately sixty percent of African American and Latino men are affected by razor bumps.    Because of this, black men need to be particularly careful when shaving in order to avoid ingrown hairs.

Shaving techniques and tips for men:

  • If possible, avoid shaving close to the skin.
  • Be sure to moisturize the skin after shaving to keep it smooth.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth, as shaving against pulls at the skin and makes razor bumps more probable.
  • Don’t forget to clean the blades with alcohol before shaving to reduce the possibility of infection.
  • Apply razor bump cream, especially if you know you’re more susceptible to ingrown hairs.
  • If possible, shave after or during a hot shower as it opens the pores and then rinse with cold water.
